Declutter your closet, broken into 6 small steps

Decluttering usually starts with pulling everything out of the closet, and that's exactly why it fails: two hours later, there's a mountain on the bed and no energy left to decide anything.

Work one shelf or section at a time, and finish each section before starting the next. The room never looks worse than when you started.

Start here · under 2 minutes

Grab three bags: keep, donate, trash.

Under two minutes. Label them with a marker or sticky note.

The rest of the steps

  1. Step 2:

Pick one shelf or one hanging section.

The smallest one. Not the whole closet.

  2. Step 3:

    Take out only that section.

Hold each item for a second: wore it this year? Fits now? Keep. Otherwise donate.

  3. Step 4:

Put the keepers back, folded or hung.

Finish this section completely before touching the next.

  4. Step 5:

Repeat for one more section if you have energy.

Stopping after one section is a success, not a failure.

  5. Step 6:

Put the donate bag in your car or by the door.

Today. Bags that stay in the closet get un-donated.

Why this one stalls

Every item is a decision with feelings attached. Fifty decisions in a row is tiring, so you stop halfway.

If you get stuck

Unsure about something? Put it in a "maybe" box with today's date. If you haven't opened it in three months, donate it without looking inside.

What “done” looks like

One section clear, and a donate bag that has actually left the room.

These steps follow the same rules as the method in our task breakdown guide: the first step is physical and takes under two minutes, and every step after it is something you can see yourself doing. Got a head full of other things too? Start with a brain dump.
