Organize your desk, broken into 6 small steps

A cluttered desk is a pile of unfinished decisions: papers to deal with, cables you might need, mugs from last week.

Empty the surface completely, then put back only what you use every day. Everything else gets a home somewhere else.

Start here · under 2 minutes

Take every mug and glass to the kitchen.

Under two minutes. An easy first win.

The rest of the steps

  1. Step 2:

Move everything else off the desk into one box.

Yes, everything. The desk is now empty.

  2. Step 3:

    Wipe the desk.

A clean empty surface is a nice reset.

  3. Step 4:

Put back only what you use every day.

Laptop, a pen, a notebook, a lamp. That's usually it.

  4. Step 5:

Sort the box into: trash, file, act on.

"Act on" papers go in one folder or tray, not back on the desk.

  5. Step 6:

Add the "act on" papers to your to-do list.

Now they're tasks with names, not a pile.

Why this one stalls

Each paper on the desk is a small task in disguise, and sorting them means facing all those tasks at once.

If you get stuck

Spend two minutes at the end of each day putting things back. A desk stays clear by small resets, not big cleanups.

What “done” looks like

A clear desk with only daily things on it, and one tray for papers to act on.

These steps follow the same rules as the method in our task breakdown guide: the first step is physical and takes under two minutes, and every step after it is something you can see yourself doing. Got a head full of other things too? Start with a brain dump.
