Clean your room, broken into 7 small steps

When a room gets messy enough, it stops looking like a set of things to put away and starts looking like one big wall. That's when it's hardest to start.

Clean by category, not by area: all the trash, then all the dishes, then all the clothes. Each pass is easy because you only make one kind of decision.

Start here · under 2 minutes

Open the window or turn on a light you like.

Thirty seconds. It changes how the room feels before you touch anything.

The rest of the steps

  1. Step 2:

Pick up only trash, into one bag.

Wrappers, papers, empty bottles. Nothing else.

  2. Step 3:

Collect dishes and take them to the kitchen.

Just to the counter. Washing is a different task.

  3. Step 4:

Put all dirty clothes in the laundry basket.

Clean ones go on the bed for now.

  4. Step 5:

Put away the clean clothes on the bed.

Folded or not. The goal is a clear bed.

  5. Step 6:

Clear one surface: your nightstand or desk.

Things without a home go in one box for later.

  6. Step 7:

    Make the bed.

Even roughly. A made bed makes the whole room look finished.

Why this one stalls

You can't see where to begin, and starting in a corner doesn't seem to make any difference to the rest of the room.

If you get stuck

Put on a timer for 15 minutes and do only the trash and dishes passes. Most rooms look half clean after those two.

What “done” looks like

A clear floor, a made bed, and one clean surface.

These steps follow the same rules as the method in our task breakdown guide: the first step is physical and takes under two minutes, and every step after it is something you can see yourself doing. Got a head full of other things too? Start with a brain dump.
