Pay bills, broken into 6 small steps
Most late fees don't come from not having the money. They come from not opening the email, not finding the login, or thinking you'd do it "tonight".
List every bill once, pay the closest one, then automate whatever you can so next month needs fewer decisions.
Start here · under 2 minutes
Open your banking app.
Just open it. Under a minute, and the scariest part is done.
The rest of the steps
- Step 2:
Write a list of bills with their due dates.
Rent, phone, utilities, cards, subscriptions. Check your email for "due" or "statement".
- Step 3:
Pay the one due soonest.
One payment, done. Screenshot or save the confirmation.
- Step 4:
Pay the next ones, or schedule them.
Most bank apps let you schedule a payment for a future date.
- Step 5:
Turn on autopay for fixed bills.
The ones that are the same every month are the easiest to automate.
- Step 6:
Add the rest to your calendar a few days early.
With the link or the account number in the event.
Why this one stalls
Looking at money feels stressful, so you avoid the app where the stress lives, even when there's enough to pay.
If you get stuck
If you can't pay something in full, call or message the company before the due date. Many offer a payment plan or a new date when you ask early.
What “done” looks like
Every bill this month is paid, scheduled, or on autopay.
These steps follow the same rules as the method in our task breakdown guide: the first step is physical and takes under two minutes, and every step after it is something you can see yourself doing. Got a head full of other things too? Start with a brain dump.
