Make a doctor's appointment, broken into 6 small steps
Booking an appointment takes ten minutes, and it can stay on a to-do list for months. You need the number, the insurance info, your schedule and the courage to call, all at the same time.
Get everything ready first. When you call (or book online), the hard part is already done.
Start here · under 2 minutes
Find the clinic's number or booking page.
Under two minutes. Save it as a contact so you never have to search again.
The rest of the steps
- Step 2:
Get your insurance card or info ready.
Take a photo of it so it's always on your phone.
- Step 3:
Look at your calendar and pick three times that work.
Having options ready makes the call much shorter.
- Step 4:
Book online or call.
Many clinics have online booking; it skips the phone call entirely.
- Step 5:
Put the appointment in your calendar with a reminder.
Include the address and anything to bring.
- Step 6:
Write down what you want to ask.
A short note on your phone. You'll forget it in the waiting room otherwise.
Why this one stalls
Phone calls with hold music, menus and questions you're not sure how to answer are tiring before they even start.
If you get stuck
If calling is the wall, write a script: "Hi, I'd like to book an appointment with Dr. X for [reason]. I'm free on...". Reading it is fine.
What “done” looks like
An appointment on your calendar with a reminder and your questions written down.
These steps follow the same rules as the method in our task breakdown guide: the first step is physical and takes under two minutes, and every step after it is something you can see yourself doing. Got a head full of other things too? Start with a brain dump.
