Fill out paperwork, broken into 6 small steps
Forms are full of small unknowns: a document number you don't have, a box you don't understand, a signature that needs a printer. Any one of them can stop you for weeks.
Separate the form from the unknowns. Fill everything you can, list the rest, and solve them one at a time.
Start here · under 2 minutes
Open the form or put the paper on the table.
Under two minutes. Grab a pen while you're there.
The rest of the steps
- Step 2:
Skim it once without filling anything.
Circle every question that needs information you don't have handy.
- Step 3:
Fill every easy field.
Name, address, dates. Often more than half the form.
- Step 4:
Gather the missing documents.
ID number, account numbers, past records. Take photos of them for next time.
- Step 5:
Fill the remaining fields, or write your questions down.
Questions for the office go in one list, asked in one call or email.
- Step 6:
Sign, make a copy, and submit.
Keep the copy and write the submission date on it.
Why this one stalls
One unclear question blocks the entire form, so you close it and the whole thing waits.
If you get stuck
Put the form somewhere you'll see it (on the keyboard, on the table) and only do the easy fields today. Half-filled is a real step.
What “done” looks like
The form submitted, with a copy and the submission date saved.
These steps follow the same rules as the method in our task breakdown guide: the first step is physical and takes under two minutes, and every step after it is something you can see yourself doing. Got a head full of other things too? Start with a brain dump.
